Hammam Experience

Last week, during our Surf & Yoga Retreat Week, we had the opportunity to visit our local hammam with a few of the group for some much-deserved spa time.

Being regular visitors to the hammam, it was really nice to experience it through the ladies eyes – as if for the first time – and to be like a ‘hammam virgin’ again. And what fun!

For those who haven’t been yet, our local hammam at Targant Spa is just 50 metre from the guesthouse. It comfortably seated the four of us in a heated mosaic tiled steam room.

With plentiful buckets of water thrown over us, black soap lathered lovingly, strong strokes of a hammam glove to sweep away dead skin, spaghetti skin as the ladies in the hammam say.

Even some henna applied to your skin, it’s reputed to aide with sun protection and tints the skin for that naturally bronzed effect.

Masks of clay, argan nut, and a hair wash.

There’s so much water and soap bubbles flying around, it feels kind of like bath time as a child when your siblings and friends splashed around in the bath tub together.

A few awkward moments as boobs and butts, front and back, inevitably end up in each other’s faces – people look quite different naked and out of their wetsuits!

Et voila, you emerge an hour later glowing, with soft skin and feeling lighter. With that outer layer scrubbed off, a touch of vulnerability revealed, you may even feel more open and connected to those you shared the intimate experience with.

Thank you ladies for sharing your first hammam experience – and private parts – with us, very grateful for that memory.
